I rarely redo projects in consecutive grading periods, but I decided to revisit this concept with my 7th graders. The 8th graders who did this project before were given tissue paper to add depth and details to their names, but it was not structurally-sound so I could not hang them up on display. This time, the students were given 2 pieces of construction paper-1 piece for the base and the second piece to be on top. Their letters needed to overlap and the students were encouraged to set each letter at varying depths, using stacked mounting tape squares. The top piece was attached at the edges using hot glue, and the center was torn away, revealing their names. The idea was to simulate "punching through paper." These relief sculptures were more cohesive and more successful than the previous group, and I think it was because of the materials.
Materials: construction paper, card stock, Sharpies, X-acto knives, mounting tape squares, hot glue.
