For this lesson, the kindergartners were introduced to Street Art and J. Goldcrown! We learned what a mural was and looked at the mural in our building. We reinforced the concept of REPETITION by talking about patterns and shapes. The students were tasked with making their version of J. Goldcrown's "Bleeding Hearts" murals, but choosing a shape [heart, circle, square, triangle] and repeating the shape multiple times to fill in the page. Filling the page is essential because it allows students to draw bigger, and the repetition provides practice on drawing a particular shape. Making sure they fill the space with repeated shapes [or patterns] will help students balance their composition, even though it is an open one. This is a rudimentary Principles of Design [balance, repetition, unity, pattern] that is quick.
