In First Grade, we learned about Pop Art and Jim Dine. We were also introduced to the principle of balance. The students learned about directional balance--horizontal, vertical, and diagonal. We drew out a 4 x 4 grid on paper with black oil pastels. We added hearts, making sure that all 4 boxes balanced visually by comparing across the board, horizontally, vertically and diagonally. Then, using oil pastels, we added patterns and splotches of color. Painting with neon and regular liquid watercolors to finish them off simulated the painting style of Jim Dine.
