We learned about polar climates, landscape paintings, background, foreground, and horizon lines in kindergarten! We used liquid watercolor paints, paper and salt to create an aurora borealis-type background/sky. Then we did the same thing to a folded piece of paper, only this time they painted one side. We folded the dry side over the wet side and pressed, creating prints to add a variety to our foregrounds. After tearing our foregrounds into strips, we glued them to our backgrounds, established a horizon line first, and overlapped pieces to the bottom of our background paintings. Adding a white moon to our sky was the finishing touch.
