I am fascinated with Neurographic art. Neurographic art usually has curved lines and rounded intersections. This style is similar to Zentangle-style design in that it calms the artist down and helps them clear their mind. I find it to have a slightly hypnotic effect when done correctly. I wanted to do a name project that incorporated this style, and what better way than to have the 6th graders practice their cursive and transform their signature into rounded shapes of color. Their names become unrecognizable, planned shapes become unplanned, organic spaces, and lines start to form on their own.
We talked about balance, about line style, and also about color schemes. Students could combine spaces with black Sharpie to give a more "neurotic" effect.
Materials: Paper, liquid watercolors (neon, basic, metallic), Sharpies
